Why buy exotic leather goods in Thailand
Thais themselves usually prefer foreign brands in classic leather, but foreign buyers value exotic leather goods highly, and there is always demand for them abroad.
- Production near Bangkok. The main manufacturers are close to the capital, so a business trip can easily include viewing the products.
- Showrooms. Many manufacturers have showrooms where you can see the whole range and choose models.
- Wholesale discounts. For wholesale orders you can negotiate significant discounts with manufacturers.
- Handmade and wide choice. From classics to bright colours and unusual designs.
Types of exotic leather
Crocodile leather
The most expensive, beautiful and durable. Items last for years. The price depends on the part of the hide, the scale size and the finish, matte or glossy.
Stingray leather
Second in price after crocodile. A recognisable pattern of hard “beads” and a shine, in colours up to red and purple. In my experience, women more often choose stingray.
Snake leather
Beautiful, many colours, the most affordable. The downside: it's thinner and loses its look faster.
| Leather | Durability | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Crocodile | Very high | The highest |
| Stingray | High | Medium to high |
| Snake | Lower than the others | The most affordable |
What they make: bags, clutches, wallets, purses, belts, briefcases, shoes, watch straps, card holders and accessories.
Documents: no export without CITES
Crocodile leather and many snake species, such as python, fall under CITES, the international convention on trade in endangered species. Export from Thailand requires a permit and, depending on the species and country, an import permit as well.
- Goods without documents can be seized at customs, and the buyer may face fines.
- A legal manufacturer uses raw material from registered farms and can confirm its origin.
- Requirements for stingray and other leathers depend on the species and the country; we check them in advance.
I help choose manufacturers that work legally and arrange the export paperwork together with the supplier and a customs broker.
How to tell real exotic leather
- 🐊“Crocodile-embossed” leatherOften it's ordinary cowhide with a pressed pattern. Real skin has scales of different sizes and shapes, and the pattern doesn't repeat.
- ✋Stingray “beads”Stingray leather is covered with hard “beads” you can feel. A smooth imitation with a printed pattern gives itself away at once.
- 📄DocumentsAsk for proof of the raw material's origin and the export documents before you pay.
- 💸PriceIf “crocodile” costs the same as ordinary leather, it's almost certainly an imitation.
How I help, step by step
- Your request. Which items and leathers you need, volume, budget, your own brand or ready-made models, destination country.
- Finding manufacturers. I find manufacturers near Bangkok, visit showrooms and send you photos and videos of the range.
- Checking legality. Origin of the raw material, company registration, ability to arrange export documents.

One of my clients regularly exported crocodile, stingray and other exotic leather bags and accessories from Thailand to his home country. I found manufacturers, negotiated prices, checked batches and coordinated the paperwork. It's still one of my clients' most requested services.

All prices include 7% VAT.
If you come yourself, I can accompany you to showrooms as an interpreter: half a day is 6,490 ฿. Transport, duties and fees are paid separately. Payment is by PromptPay, bank transfer in Thailand or SWIFT from abroad.
Please note: I only work with legal products and independently represent the buyer. CITES permits are issued by the authorised government bodies, and customs clearance is done by licensed brokers. I recommend paying the supplier only to a company account and under a contract.
Frequently asked questions
Can I come and choose the items in person?
Yes. Manufacturers are near Bangkok and many have showrooms. I can plan the route and accompany you as an interpreter.
Is CITES needed for stingray leather?
It depends on the species and the importing country. For crocodile and many snake leathers a permit is definitely required. We check the requirements for your batch in advance.
Can you put my logo on the items or make them under my brand?
Many manufacturers offer this. Terms and minimum volume depend on the factory; I discuss them during negotiations.
Can I buy a small batch?
Yes, showrooms also sell small volumes. But even a small batch needs export documents, so we plan for that from the start.
How much does your work cost?
A video consultation is 1,690 ฿ for 30 minutes; a day of sourcing, showrooms and negotiations is 11,900 ฿. I give you the scope and total cost in advance.
Do you only work with Russia?
No. Most requests come from Russia and the CIS, but I work with buyers from many countries; terms are discussed individually.
