Has a Thai bank frozen your account? Don't panic, but don't wait either. Accounts are most often frozen after a P2P crypto-to-baht exchange, after a transfer from a stranger, or following a bank review.

Mike Boldyrev. 14 years in Thailand: I find out why the account was frozen, prepare documents and explanations, go with you to the police and the bank and negotiate in Thai, with you or on your behalf.

The first 5 steps if your account is frozen

  1. Don't make new P2P trades or transfers through this or other accounts until the reason is clear.
  2. Find out the reason at the bank: who imposed the restriction (the police or the bank itself), the case number, the police station and the investigator's name.
  3. Collect documents: passport, visa, bank book, statements, exchange trade history and chats with counterparties.
  4. Don't delete chats or order history: they are your main evidence.
  5. Don't wait. The sooner you contact the police and the bank, the easier it is to explain the situation.

Why a Thai bank freezes an account

  • 🚓Police order after a complaintThe most common reason. Someone reported being scammed, and your account turned up in the chain of transfers.
  • 💱P2P crypto exchangeYou honestly sold USDT for baht, but the buyer paid with someone else's or stolen money. The victim only sees your account.
  • 🛡Bank reviewSince 2023 Thailand has had strict measures against fraud and “mule” accounts. Banks suspend suspicious accounts themselves.
  • 📄KYC and source of fundsThe bank asks you to confirm your identity, address or source of funds and restricts the account until it's checked.
  • 🪪Expired visa or passportIf your documents on file are out of date, the account may be partly restricted until you update them.
  • ⚖️Serious casesIn rare cases an account is seized in a money-laundering case. That needs a licensed lawyer straight away.

Full or partial freeze. Sometimes the whole account is frozen. Sometimes the bank blocks only the disputed amount, so the balance “goes negative” by that sum while the rest of the money can still be used. The type of freeze decides where to go and which documents to prepare.

Unfreezing a Thai bank account

How to unfreeze a Thai bank account, step by step

  1. Diagnosis. We find out who restricted the account and why. If it was at the police's request, the bank usually gives the station and case number.
  2. Documents and explanation. We gather proof that the money is yours and legally obtained, identify the problem transactions and prepare a clear explanation for the police and the bank.
  3. Police. A meeting with the investigator, often at a station in another province or at the cyber police. We explain the situation, show documents and answer questions. Sometimes an agreement with the complainant is needed.
  4. Release letter. Once the questions are resolved, the police send the bank a letter to unfreeze the account.
  5. Bank. The bank processes the letter. Sometimes the letter “gets lost” or goes by regular mail, so follow-up is needed: calls to the police and the bank and, if needed, a branch visit.
  6. Money available. Usually at the branch first, then online too.

Documents usually needed

  • Passport, visa, bank book (passbook).
  • Account statements for several months, including the disputed transaction.
  • Proof that the money is legal: salary, contracts, sale of property, business income.
  • For P2P: exchange order history, the counterparty's profile, screenshots of the order chat and crypto transfer confirmations.
  • Documents on work or study in Thailand, if you have them.
Why understanding P2P matters

Many investigators need a plain explanation of how P2P works on Binance, Bybit and other exchanges, and where a normal trade ends and fraud begins. Over years of handling such cases I've studied P2P exchange in detail, so I can show the police that you followed the exchange's rules and honestly delivered crypto for the baht you received.

From experience

Ayutthaya · SCB

Account frozen for almost 2 years

A payment from an acquaintance who did currency exchange passed through the client's account and turned out to be linked to a police complaint. The investigator wasn't responding, and the client's Thai lawyer got nowhere.

Several trips to the police and an explanation letter in Thai: the investigator issued a release letter, and about 2 weeks later the bank gave access to the money.

Bangkok · KBank

A police case, 2 years frozen

The clients' account had been frozen for about 2 years because of a police case.

Accompaniment to the Bangkok cyber police, who agreed to lift the freeze. The bank kept “not receiving” the notice, so I connected the bank and the investigator until the documents arrived. The money was withdrawn and the account works.

Chiang Mai · P2P

Frozen after a P2P exchange

A student's account was frozen after a P2P baht exchange; the case was handled by Chiang Mai police.

We prepared documents and answers to the questions, had one police meeting in Bangkok, then followed up by phone. About a month later the freeze was lifted.

Note

Every case is different

Timing depends on the police, the bank and the complainant. But in all three cases what made the difference was the right documents, a clear explanation in Thai and constant follow-up.

Can it be resolved without you being there?

Often, yes, especially if you're not in Bangkok or have already left Thailand. I can meet the police and the bank as your representative under a notarised power of attorney, staying in touch with you by voice or video call. But some banks and investigators require the account holder in person at least once; we find that out at the start.

Transport, document translation, notarised powers of attorney and lawyers' services are paid separately. Payment is by PromptPay, bank transfer in Thailand or SWIFT from abroad. If the case goes to court or criminal proceedings, we bring in licensed Thai lawyers.

How to avoid freezes in future

  • Only deal with verified counterparties and check that the payer's name matches the name on the profile.
  • Don't accept payment from third parties, and don't agree to “help” anyone, friend or stranger, with a transfer.
  • Never let anyone use your account or banking app.
  • Keep your order history, chats and transfer confirmations.
  • Keep your documents at the bank up to date: passport, visa, address.
  • Be ready to prove your source of funds if the bank asks.

Please note: I'm an interpreter and representative, not a lawyer, and I only work with legally obtained funds. Nobody can guarantee the outcome: the decision to lift a freeze is made by the police, the bank and sometimes the complainant. My job is to prepare the documents properly, put your position across in Thai and see the process through.

Frequently asked questions

How long does unfreezing an account take?

It varies, from a few weeks to a few months. Active work usually takes a few days; after that it's waiting for the police to send the letter and the bank to process it.

Why was my account frozen after a P2P trade?

Most often because the buyer paid for the crypto with someone else's or stolen money. The fraud victim files a complaint, and the police freeze the accounts in the chain of transfers, including yours.

The case is with police in another province. Do I have to go there?

Sometimes yes; sometimes it can be handled through a Bangkok station and by sending documents. We find out during the diagnosis.

Can it be resolved if I've already left Thailand?

In many cases yes, under a notarised power of attorney and with you on a video call. But sometimes the bank or the police require you in person at least once.

Will the bank close my account after unfreezing it?

That can happen. Sometimes the bank returns the money and closes the account. The main thing is getting access to your funds; if needed, we'll help you open a new account.

Do I need a lawyer?

In most cases the right documents, a clear explanation and negotiation are enough. If the case reaches court, criminal charges or a money-laundering seizure, you need a licensed lawyer, and we bring one in.

Do you guarantee the account will be unfrozen?

No, an honest specialist won't promise that: the decision is made by the police and the bank. I guarantee professional preparation, a clear explanation of your position in Thai, and work to an agreed plan: stages, visits and a report after each step.
