How to find a real manufacturer and not end up buying thin air. Thailand is one of the world leaders in glove production: nitrile, latex, medical, household and industrial. But gloves are exactly where a huge number of buyers have been burned in recent years: fake brand “quotas”, forged certificates, gloves thinner than stated and even used goods sold as new.

Mike Boldyrev: 14 years in Thailand, working on the buyer's side. I find manufacturers, check them on site, negotiate in Thai and control batch quality before shipment.

Why buyers source gloves in Thailand

Nitrile gloves from Thailand wholesale
Nitrile gloves in Thailand
  • Home-grown raw material. Thailand is the world's largest producer of natural rubber. Latex and rubber are the basis of latex and rubber gloves, so production here has always been strong.
  • Export experience. Thailand is among the world's leading glove manufacturers and exporters. Many factories have supplied Europe, the Americas and Asia for decades.
  • Standards. Large factories produce to European and American standards and know how to handle certification.
  • Wide range. From thin examination gloves for clinics to thick chemical-resistant gloves for factories and household gloves for the home.

Demand for gloves soared during the pandemic and has remained steady since: clinics, labs, food plants, restaurants, beauty salons, cleaning companies and factories all buy them.

What gloves you can buy from Thailand

Types of gloves from Thailand: nitrile, latex, medical
Gloves of different types and colours

Nitrile

The most in-demand today. Nitrile causes no latex allergy and resists punctures, oils and many chemicals well. Available as examination, food-grade, industrial and household gloves; colours are blue, light blue, white and black. Almost always powder-free.

Latex

Made from natural rubber latex, where Thailand is especially strong. Maximum elasticity and fingertip sensitivity, which is why surgeons and dentists like them. The downside is that some people are allergic to latex.

Medical: examination and surgical

Examination gloves are non-sterile, in boxes of 100–200. Surgical gloves are sterile, packed in single pairs, anatomically shaped and precisely sized. In most countries they are registered as medical devices.

Household rubber gloves

Thick reusable gloves for cleaning and washing up, often flock-lined with a textured palm. A good product for retail chains and household stores.

Industrial and chemical-resistant

Thick nitrile, latex or neoprene gloves, elbow-length, for acids, oils and solvents. Protection standards such as EN ISO 374 matter here.

Food-grade and vinyl

Food-grade nitrile gloves are for kitchens and food plants; approval for food contact is confirmed by documents. Vinyl gloves are the cheapest but weak, and are mostly made in China.

MaterialProsConsWhere used
NitrilePros: No latex allergy, strong, resistant to oils and many chemicalsCons: Slightly less elastic than latexWhere used: Clinics, labs, food plants, salons, factories
LatexPros: Maximum elasticity and sensitivityCons: Latex allergy is possibleWhere used: Surgery, dentistry, labs
RubberPros: Thick, strong, long-lastingCons: Not suited to precise workWhere used: Home, cleaning, cleaning services
VinylPros: The cheapestCons: Weak protection, tear easilyWhere used: Short tasks with no risk

What to check when buying gloves

Gloves only look like a simple product. Two boxes of “blue nitrile gloves, size M” can differ in price several times over, and it is not about the brand. Here is what we fix in the specification and contract:

ParameterWhat we check
Material and purposeNitrile, latex or rubber; examination, surgical, food-grade, industrial or household
Thickness and weightThickness in mil or millimetres and the weight of one glove in grams. Weight is the quickest way to tell whether material was skimped on
Length and sizesStandard or extended cuff; XS–XL sizing or exact sizes for surgical gloves
PowderPowdered or powder-free. Medical gloves today are almost always powder-free
AQLThe acceptable defect (pinhole) level in a batch. The lower the number, the stricter the control; requirements are stricter for medical gloves
StandardsFor medical gloves: EN 455 (Europe), ASTM D6319 for nitrile and ASTM D3578 for latex (USA); for chemical protection: EN ISO 374
Market documentsFor Europe: CE marking and declarations; for the USA: manufacturer registration with the FDA and 510(k) clearance for the specific medical device; elsewhere: registration of medical gloves in the importing country
PackagingPieces per box (usually 100 or 200), boxes per carton, label language, production under your brand
Shelf lifeProduction date and expiry: gloves age, especially when stored in heat

Beware: scammers in the glove market

During the pandemic, gloves became one of the main subjects of fraud in international trade, and these schemes still operate. Typical signs:

  • 💸Below-market priceGloves of known quality noticeably cheaper than everyone else's.
  • 🏷A “brand quota”A middleman “sells” a quota supposedly allocated to him by a well-known manufacturer. Usually it is fake.
  • 📄LOI, POF, “procedure”First they ask for a letter of intent and proof of funds, then for payment of a “procedure”.
  • 🏦Payment upfrontFull or large prepayment before you have seen the factory and the goods.
  • 🧾Forged reportsCE certificates, FDA registrations and lab reports that do not appear in official databases.
  • 📸Someone else's photos and videos“Warehouse videos” and box photos taken from real manufacturers.
  • 🚪No visits allowedThey won't let you into the factory or warehouse, with various excuses.
  • 👤Personal bank accountOr to a company in another country, or payment in cryptocurrency.
  • 🔗A chain of middlemenFive “mandates” between you and the factory, and no one has seen the real seller.
Fraud happens with real goods too: gloves thinner and lighter than stated, fewer pieces per box, powdered instead of powder-free, non-sterile examination gloves instead of sterile surgical ones, general-purpose gloves instead of medical ones, expired stock. The media have also reported cases of used or rejected gloves being sold as new. So checks are needed both before the deal and before shipment.

How to check the manufacturer and glove quality

Checking nitrile glove quality in Thailand
Checking gloves before purchase
  1. Company register. We check registration, directors and address in the Thai register.
  2. Manufacturer or trader. We find out whether the company has its own production or resells someone else's goods.
  3. Certificates in official databases. We check certificate and registration numbers against the issuing bodies' databases, and lab reports with the labs themselves.
  4. Factory or warehouse visit. We see production and goods with our own eyes and take photos and video.
  5. Samples. We compare samples against the stated specification.
  6. Weighing and counting. We weigh the gloves and count how many are in a box.
  7. Lab test. For large batches, independent testing for pinholes (AQL), thickness and strength.
  8. Pre-shipment inspection. International inspection companies (SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas and others) check the batch before loading.
  9. Loading supervision. Being present at loading, photos of the container and seal.

Where gloves are made in Thailand

  • Bangkok and surroundings, Chonburi. Many manufacturers have offices and factories here, and it is easy to come for a meeting.
  • Southern Thailand. The country's rubber belt: Songkhla (Hat Yai), plus Yala and Narathiwat near the Malaysian border. In my experience, you can find factories here with lower prices than in central Thailand.

If you want to come yourself, I can plan a route around the factories and accompany you as an interpreter.

Documents and shipping

On the Thai side you usually need an invoice, a packing list, a certificate of origin, a specification and product certificates.

In most countries medical gloves are medical devices and need registration in the importing country before they can be sold. In Russia this means medical device registration under national or EAEU rules. In EAEU countries, industrial and household gloves count as personal protective equipment and go through conformity assessment under TR CU 019/2011. Other countries' requirements are checked separately.

Delivery is usually by sea in containers. Gloves don't like heat and humidity, so storage conditions in the warehouse and in transit matter. Customs clearance and logistics are arranged with a broker and forwarder. Broker in Thailand →

Frequently asked questions

Which gloves are best value from Thailand?

Thailand is especially strong in latex and nitrile gloves and in household rubber gloves, thanks to its own rubber and export experience. Vinyl gloves are usually better value from China.

How much do nitrile gloves from Thailand cost?

The price depends on thickness, weight, standard, volume and the market, so there is no fixed price. I get current prices from manufacturers for your specification.

How can I tell a supplier is real?

Check the company in the register, verify certificates in official databases, see the factory and goods, get samples. If even one step is impossible, that is a reason to be wary.

Can I buy a well-known brand directly from the factory?

Major manufacturers usually work through official distributors. “Quotas” and “allocations” from middlemen turn out to be fraud in most cases.

Do medical gloves need registration in my country?

As a rule, yes: medical gloves are medical devices. We check your country's requirements before ordering.

Can gloves be made under my own brand?

Many manufacturers offer production under the buyer's brand (OEM). Terms and the minimum volume depend on the factory.

Do you only work with Russia?

No. Most requests come from Russia and the CIS, but I work with buyers from many countries; terms are discussed individually.
