Do you need a Thai licence?

Tourists can drive on an international permit for a while. But if you live in Thailand long-term (spending the winter, working or running a business), a Thai licence is far more convenient: fewer questions at police checks, and easier rentals and insurance. Without a valid licence, insurance may not cover damage in an accident.

Two ways to get a licence in Thailand

🔄 Converting your licence

If you have a valid licence from your country. The fastest option: usually no written or driving test, just documents and basic checks.

🆕 A new licence with exams

If you have no licence, it has expired, or you need a new category. Training, a theory test and a driving test.

Which documents you need

DocumentNotes
Passport and visaUsually a non-tourist visa is required. We confirm the visa requirements with your DLT office
Proof of addressA residence certificate from immigration or your embassy (usually valid for 30 days), a work permit or another document your office accepts
Medical certificateFrom a clinic or hospital, recent: usually no older than one month
Your licence and its translationFor conversion only: your valid home licence and its translation (certified in some cases)
Document copiesCopies of your passport page and visa, signed by you

If you want both a motorbike and a car licence, some offices require a separate set of documents for each category. I translate licences and other documents into Thai myself.

How converting a foreign licence works

  1. We collect the documents and translate your licence.
  2. We go to the DLT in your city, or book in advance if the office works by appointment.
  3. We do the checks: colour vision, reaction time and depth perception. Some offices also give a short briefing.
  4. You get the licence. If the documents are in order, it usually takes from a few hours to one day.

How the exam for a new licence works

  1. Booking and documents. We submit the documents to the DLT office and get a date. Many offices work by appointment.
  2. Checks and training. Colour vision, reaction and depth tests, then a few hours of lectures on traffic rules.
  3. Theory test. 50 questions; you need at least 45 correct. If you fail, you get a retake date.
  4. Driving test. On a motorbike: ride the course following the signs and stops, the slalom and a narrow straight lane. In a car: drive forwards and backwards through a narrow lane without touching the cones, stop at the kerb (no more than 25 cm away) and parallel park.
  5. Getting the licence. First you get a temporary 2-year licence.

An important detail: the briefing before the driving test and communication with the examiners are often in Thai. This is exactly where foreigners lose the most time and nerves: they miss an important explanation or misunderstand the task.

How to prepare for the theory test

  • Practise with the official mock tests: exam questions come from the official question bank.
  • Learn the road signs and the rules that differ from your country separately, such as driving on the left and motorbike rules.
  • Do a few tests every day rather than everything the night before.
  • Go through confusing questions with someone who knows Thai rules from the inside; I help with this in a consultation.

Renewing a Thai licence

Your first Thai licence is temporary, usually valid for 2 years, whether you got it after the exam or by converting a foreign licence. It is then exchanged for a 5-year licence and renewed every 5 years after that. Moving to the 5-year licence usually requires a long-stay visa, proof of address, a medical certificate and a short training course, which can sometimes be done online. The exact procedure depends on your visa type and DLT office, so we check it in advance.

My experience

I've been through this process more than once myself: I've taken the Thai licence exams and renewed my licence. So I know where the usual difficulties are, which documents people most often forget, and how not to waste an extra day at the DLT.

How I help

  • I explain which documents you need in your case and at your DLT office.
  • I translate your licence and other documents into Thai.
  • I help you prepare for the theory test: we go through difficult questions and Thai specifics of the rules.
  • I accompany you to the DLT and interpret briefings, communication with examiners and explanations before the driving test.
  • I help with renewals and with exchanging a temporary licence for a 5-year one.

You take the exam yourself; I help you prepare, understand every step and avoid wasting time on mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a licence on a tourist visa?

As a rule, no: the DLT usually does not accept tourist visas or visa-exempt entry; you need a long-stay Non-Immigrant visa (for example Non-B or Non-O). Practice differs between offices, so we check your case before you submit documents.

In which language is the theory test?

You can take it in Thai or English. Other languages depend on the office.

How long does it take to get a licence?

Converting a foreign licence usually takes one visit. A new licence with exams usually takes one or two days at the DLT if your documents are ready and you pass the exams first time. This does not include waiting for an appointment or any retakes.

How much does help with a licence cost?

A video consultation is 1,690 ฿, accompaniment to the DLT is 6,490 ฿ for half a day, and licence translation is from 1,090 ฿ per page. Government fees and the medical certificate are extra.

Can I get a motorbike and a car licence at the same time?

Yes, but some offices require a separate set of documents for each category, and the exams are taken separately.

Do you guarantee I'll pass the exam?

No, you take the exam yourself. I help you prepare, collect the right documents and understand every step, so your chances of passing first time are as high as possible.
