How to choose an interpreter in Thailand: 7 signs of a reliable one
Interpreter in Thailand · hospital · police · bank · negotiations
Finding “someone who speaks Thai” in Thailand is easy. Finding an interpreter you can trust with a doctor's appointment, a police statement or a conversation with the bank about a frozen account is much harder.

How to choose an interpreter in Thailand: 7 signs
Sign 1
Experience in your exact situation
Interpreting on a tour and in a hospital are different jobs. At a clinic, terms, diagnoses and insurance matter; at the police, the exact wording of the statement; at the bank, KYC and source-of-funds questions.
Ask: “Have you handled this kind of situation before? What do they usually ask?” An experienced interpreter will answer specifically.
Sign 2
Knowing Thai institutions, not just the language
In Thailand, how you say something matters as much as what you say: polite forms, a calm tone, the right order of steps.
A good interpreter will tell you in advance which documents to bring, who makes the decision and what to expect.
Sign 3
Preparation before the meeting
A reliable interpreter asks questions first: what happened, which documents you have, who will be at the meeting, and asks for the papers in advance.
If someone offers to “just turn up and interpret” a complex case with no preparation, that's a red flag.
Sign 4
Honest limits
An interpreter isn't a lawyer or a doctor. A professional doesn't promise to “solve anything” and doesn't give legal opinions.
If you need a lawyer, they'll say so and help you work with a licensed Thai lawyer. Big guarantees usually end in disappointment.
Sign 5
Verifiable reputation
“Experienced and reliable” means nothing if you can't check it. Look for a verified profile, reviews from real clients, clear prices and cancellation terms.
My profile is verified on Interpreters.travel, and client reviews are on the Reviews page.
Sign 6
The languages you actually need
Often several languages meet in one situation: the client speaks Russian, the documents are in English, the doctor explains in Thai. It helps when one interpreter covers the whole chain, with nothing lost in between.
I work with Russian, Thai and English. My Chinese is conversational; for professional Chinese interpreting I bring in Thai colleagues with excellent Chinese.
Sign 7
Staying calm under stress
Hospitals, police, a frozen account: all stressful. A good interpreter helps keep the conversation calm.
They make sure you understand every word before you sign and explain the next steps after the meeting.
Questions to ask an interpreter
- Have you handled this kind of situation before: hospital, police, bank, negotiations?
- Which documents should I bring, and what should I send you in advance?
- How much does it cost, how is time counted, and what is paid separately?
- What are the cancellation and rescheduling terms?
- What will you do if the matter goes beyond interpreting?
- Where can I see reviews and proof of your qualifications?
If you get evasive answers to these questions, it's better to look for someone else.
Mistakes that cost more than an interpreter
- 📱An app at the hospitalA translation app can handle a menu, but it can easily distort a diagnosis, a dosage or insurance terms.
- ✍️Signing “on trust”At the police or a bank, never sign a Thai text that hasn't been fully explained to you.
- 🙋A casual acquaintanceA friend who “speaks a bit of Thai” may not know the terms and may be too shy to ask again.
- ⏰Searching at the last minuteWithout preparation even a good interpreter does worse. Contact one as soon as you know about the meeting.
