Coconut charcoal in Thailand: manufacturers, prices, export

Export from Thailand · hookah, grill, industry

Coconut charcoal is produced in Thailand on an industrial scale: there is plenty of raw material, dozens of factories, and the ports of Bangkok and Laem Chabang serve exporters. Finding a seller online is easy. The hard part is telling a real factory from a reseller with a nice website, and knowing what quality will arrive in the container.

Mike Boldyrev: 14 years in Thailand, I speak Thai. I help buyers find and check a factory, agree on the price and supervise the first batch. I work with buyers from Russia, the CIS and many other countries.

Why buy coconut charcoal in Thailand

Coconut shell is a by-product of the food industry: coconut water, milk, oil, desserts. So the country has plenty of raw material and charcoal production is steady.

Hookahs themselves are banned in Thailand, so hookah charcoal here is made mainly for export: to the Middle East, Europe, Russia and the CIS.

An honest word about competitors: the largest exporter of hookah coconut charcoal is Indonesia, and its prices are often lower. Buyers choose Thailand for convenient logistics, straightforward work with factories and the option to come and check everything on site. Before you order, I help you compare the Thai offer with market prices so you don't overpay.

What coconut charcoal is made in Thailand

Hookah cubes

Pressed briquettes, most often 25–26 mm. The main export product. Ash content, burn time and no smell are what matter.

Grill briquettes (BBQ)

Hexagonal, pillow-shaped, bars. They burn longer than ordinary wood charcoal, and purity requirements are lower than for hookah charcoal.

Shell charcoal

Carbonised shell without pressing. Raw material for activated carbon, briquetting and industry.

Under your brand

Many factories make packaging with your logo: 1 kg boxes, master cases, bags. This affects price and lead time.

Coconut charcoal prices in Thailand (2026 guide)

The price depends on the type of charcoal, quality (ash content, density), packaging, volume and delivery terms. Below are guide figures based on open offers from Thai and Asian exporters on B2B platforms:

Hookah cubes, FOB Thailand≈ $1,100–1,700 / t
Grill briquettes (BBQ)≈ $550–700 / t
Shell charcoal (raw material)≈ $550–850 / t
Retail packaging under your brandpriced separately
Minimum orderusually a 20′ container (~18–22 t)
This is a guide, not a factory offer. Only a request for your volume, packaging and destination gives a real price. If someone promises hookah charcoal at $100–300 per tonne, it is almost certainly a typo in the listing or bait.

How to check charcoal quality before paying for the container

  • Composition: 100% coconut shell, no sawdust or chemical additives.
  • Ash content: the lower the better. For premium hookah charcoal, manufacturers state about 2%.
  • Burn time and smell: a cube burns long and evenly, with no smell, sparks or crackling.
  • Density and size: cubes are uniform and do not crumble in transit.
  • Moisture and packaging: the charcoal is dry and the packaging can withstand sea freight.

The best approach is to order samples from 2–3 factories, compare them at home, and check the batch on site before shipment: photos, video, opening several boxes, comparing against the sample.

Documents and logistics

Coconut charcoal from Thailand is usually shipped by sea from the port of Bangkok or Laem Chabang. Both ports are run by the Port Authority of Thailand. port.co.th

Since 1 January 2026, under Amendment 42-24 to the IMDG Code, wood and coconut charcoal (UN 1361) is carried by sea as class 4.2 dangerous goods (self-heating): passing the self-heating test (N.4) no longer exempts it from these rules. There are also requirements for preparing the batch: weathering the charcoal before packing or another permitted preparation method, a temperature no higher than 40 °C on the day of packing, and free space above the cargo in the container. So we agree packaging, documents and routing with the factory and forwarder in advance, and calculate freight as dangerous goods from the start.

The list of documents (certificate of origin, lab tests, quality certificate, etc.) depends on the importing country. Your customs broker confirms it.

I am not a customs broker or a lawyer: I help collect documents from the factory and agree them with your forwarder. Customs clearance in your country is handled by your broker.

How I help you buy coconut charcoal in Thailand

  2. Finding 3–10 manufacturers. I check that it is a real factory, not a reseller: company registration, production address, contact with the owner.
  3. Price comparison and negotiations. I talk to the factories in Thai, put the offers into one table and bargain.
  4. Samples. I arrange for samples to be sent to you by courier.
  5. Factory visit. A meeting, a look at production, photos and video for you.
  6. Batch check and shipment. Comparing with the sample before the container is loaded, liaising with the forwarder, checking the documents.

Finding and comparing suppliers is part of the “Business partner in Thailand” service; full support from samples to shipment is “Representative in Thailand”. If supplies become regular, we discuss a long-term arrangement separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy less than a container?

Sometimes, yes: some factories sell from 1 tonne. But the best price per kilo usually comes with a full container, and groupage shipping costs more per tonne.

Can the charcoal be made under my own brand?

Yes, many Thai factories make custom packaging. You need artwork, a print run and time to print the boxes; we build this into the timeline.

Do you guarantee the charcoal quality?

No one can give guarantees on behalf of a factory. My job is to reduce the risks: check the supplier, compare samples and inspect the batch before shipment, while the money for the whole container has not yet been paid.

Do you help with customs in my country?

No, I work on the Thai side. Customs clearance in your country is handled by your broker; I help get the documents he needs from the factory.

Do you source other products too?

Yes. For example, I often help with A4 paper from Thailand and scrap metal.
