Marriage registration in Thailand for foreigners: documents, translation, interpreter

Mike Boldyrev 2026-10-27

Marriage in Thailand · for foreigners

You can officially register a marriage in Thailand within a few days, but only if the documents are prepared in the right order: a certificate from your embassy, a Thai translation, legalization at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and registration at the district office, the amphoe. A mistake at any step and the wedding date has to move. Here is how it works and where you need an interpreter.

Mike Boldyrev: 14 years in Thailand. I interpret between Thai, Russian and English at district offices, embassies and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I am not a lawyer: if you need a prenuptial agreement or a divorce, I bring in a licensed Thai lawyer.

Who can register a marriage in Thailand

Marriages are registered at the district office, the amphoe (in Bangkok it is called a khet). A foreigner can marry a Thai citizen, and two foreigners can marry each other too, for example a Russian woman and an Indian man. A marriage concluded under Thai law is recognised in Russia, as Article 158 of the Russian Family Code says directly. The Thai marriage certificate just needs to be legalized and translated.

If you are both Russian citizens, you can also register the marriage at the consular section of the Russian Embassy in Bangkok. Then you get a Russian certificate and no legalization is needed. Check available dates with the embassy.

Step by step: how a foreigner registers a marriage

  1. A certificate from your embassy. Each foreigner gets a document from their own embassy confirming they are not married and are free to marry. For Russian citizens, it is issued by the consular section of the embassy in Bangkok: you need to come in person with your passports, usually by appointment. If you were married before, bring your divorce certificate.
  2. Thai translation. The certificate and the passport page are translated into Thai. The translator signs the translation, otherwise the Ministry will not accept it.
  3. Legalization at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Department of Consular Affairs stamps the certificate and the translation. The main office is on Chaeng Watthana in Bangkok, and there are branches in Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai. In Bangkok you need an online appointment. The usual time is a few working days, and there is an express option.
  4. Registration at the amphoe. You both come with your passports and the legalized documents; a Thai partner brings their ID card and house registration. You need two witnesses. If either of you doesn't speak Thai, the registrar will require an interpreter. You receive the Thai marriage certificate on the same day.

Since May 2026 the Department of Provincial Administration has tightened checks on marriages with foreigners: the registrar checks marital status in the database and may interview the bride and groom separately. Better not to start such a conversation without an interpreter.

Which documents you need

  • Passports of both partners, with a valid visa or entry stamp.
  • Marital status certificate from each foreigner's embassy, with a Thai translation and legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Many district offices only accept a recent one, so don't delay the registration.
  • Divorce certificate if you were married before, also translated and legalized.
  • The Thai partner's documents ID card and house registration (tabien baan).
  • Two witnesses over 20 years old, with ID. If you don't have your own witnesses, I can find them on site.

The exact list can differ from one district office to another, so a few days before the date I call the office and confirm the requirements in Thai.

After the wedding: documents for Russia

The Thai marriage certificate is issued in Thai. To use it in Russia (to change your surname, record the marriage in your documents or get a visa for your spouse), it is translated, legalized at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then at the consular section of the Russian Embassy. The Russian translation is certified by a notary or at the embassy.

Thailand has joined the Hague Apostille Convention, and it is due to enter into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. After that, an apostille will most likely replace the double legalization. Until then, the usual legalization applies.

What if you need a divorce?

A marriage registered in Thailand can be dissolved at the district office if both partners agree. If there is a dispute over property or children, the divorce goes through the court. That is a lawyer's job: I bring in a licensed Thai lawyer and interpret at all meetings.

How I help

  1. Reviewing your situation. Both partners' citizenship, the city, the wedding date, any previous marriage. I draw up the list of documents and the timeline.
  2. Translating documents into Thai. Certificates, passports, divorce certificate, signed by the translator for the Ministry.
  3. Embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I book the appointments, go with you and, if needed, submit documents for legalization under a power of attorney.
  4. Interpreter at the amphoe. I agree the date and document list in advance, find witnesses if needed and interpret every word between you and the registrar, including separate interviews.
  5. Documents for Russia. Translation of the marriage certificate and its legalization.

From experience. I accompanied a couple to the amphoe: a Russian man and a Thai woman. The documents were ready in advance, and the longest part turned out to be the queue. The clients were already tired of waiting, so I explained the situation to the staff in Thai and asked whether they could see us sooner, and they kindly did. The couple registered their marriage and received the documents the groom later used for his family visa.

Please note: I am an interpreter, not a lawyer or a wedding agency. The decision to register is made by the district registrar, and embassy and Ministry requirements can change, so I check them again before submitting.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners register a marriage in Thailand?

Yes. Marriages are registered at the amphoe, the district office. A foreigner can marry a Thai citizen, or two foreigners can marry. Each foreigner needs a certificate from their embassy, translated into Thai and legalized by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Is a marriage registered in Thailand recognised in Russia?

Yes, under Article 158 of the Russian Family Code. The Thai marriage certificate must be translated into Russian and legalized: first at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then at the Russian Embassy. An apostille is expected for Thailand from 28 February 2027.

How long does marriage registration take?

The registration at the amphoe itself takes one visit. Preparation (the embassy certificate, translation and MFA legalization) usually takes from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on embassy and Ministry appointments. Start at least 2–3 weeks before the wedding date.

Do I need an interpreter for the marriage registration?

Yes, if either of you doesn't speak Thai. The registrar must be sure you understand what you are signing and may ask each of you questions separately.

Can we register the marriage in Pattaya or Phuket?

Yes, at any amphoe in Thailand. There are MFA consular branches in Pattaya and Phuket, but the embassy certificate still has to be obtained in Bangkok. I travel to other cities: at least a full day plus travel.

Do you organise the wedding itself?

No. The ceremony, venue and décor are best left to a wedding agency. I handle the official part: documents, translation, the embassy, the Ministry and the registration at the amphoe.
